January 31, 2005 To the Parents/Guardians of Sylvania Junior High and High School Students: Teenagers across the country confront peer pressure and their own curiosity to experiment with drugs and alcohol. Sylvania adolescents face these same forces. As parents and educators, we need to work together to support students in making healthy decisions about illegal substances. At its January 24, 2005 meeting, the Sylvania Board of Education approved a revised Code of Conduct (PDF/67k) for Athletics and Extracurricular Activities. The Code of Conduct establishes a high standard for citizenship, gives students a face-saving reason to stay away from drugs/alcohol, and provides students struggling with drugs/alcohol access to appropriate professional treatment. The revisions clarify the Code of Conduct’s intent: to encourage students to be drug/alcohol-free and avoid situations in which drugs/alcohol are present. The changes, which are underlined and bolded in the enclosed Code of Conduct, go into effect immediately. Please talk with your teenager about the standards included in the Code of Conduct and your own parental expectations about this important subject. School personnel will also highlight and reinforce these changes with students. If you have questions about these revisions, please contact my office at 419.824.8501. Sincerely, Brad Rieger |
