Dear Sylvania Residents:
With 10 construction projects in full-swing across the Sylvania School District, summer 2010 has been especially active. The wide array of facility upgrades now visibly evident are being funded by the 2008 bond issue. Construction crews, custodial and maintenance staff, and teachers will use every minute leading-up to the September 1 first day of school to get classrooms student-ready.
Hill View Elementary – The first phase of the Hill View project will be completed by
the end of August, which will enable students to be in their new school for opening day. In mid-July, the new two story facility became visible from Whiteford Road when the original 1921 school was razed. Furniture, equipment, and supplies will be moved into the new Hill View building in mid- August.
Parking areas and a bus loop are currently under construction. Temporary programming arrangements have been put in place for the start of the school year to enable the media center, cafeteria, and main office to be constructed from August-December 2010.
Maplewood Elementary – The 2010-11 school year is the last year students will be educated in the 1929 Maplewood Elementary School. The new school, which is located on the existing Maplewood site where the Burnham Building used to be, will be completed in the spring of 2011. The demolition of the existing structure will occur
in the summer of 2011, with the doors opening at the new facility in August 2011.
The entrance of the school will face Maplewood Street. The visual prominence of the school’s media center, which faces the intersection of Monroe and Silica, is taking shape.
Central Elementary – In early July, the Sylvania Board of Education purchased a 39.75 acre parcel of land located south of Central Avenue and west of Centennial Road. The rectangular property fronts Central (8739 W. Central Avenue) and extends south to the Forest Lakes subdivision. The SSOE architectural team is in the process of designing the building configuration, where the school will be positioned on the parcel, and access into and out of the school site. The target date for opening the new Central Elementary is August of 2012.
All three of the new elementary schools will be heated and cooled by geothermal, renewable
energy systems.
Stranahan, Highland, Sylvan, Whiteford – New HVAC systems and classroom additions to accommodate all-day kindergarten and other academic programming are being installed at the four other elementary schools. New gymnasiums are being added to Stranahan and Sylvan.
Southview High School – Southview is a two-year project that includes classroom additions and upgrades, new HVAC system, new student lockers, locker room areas rebuilt, and complete facelift of the Commons area that serves as the hub of the school. Additional HVAC work and classroom renovations will occur during the summer of 2011.
Northview High School – Northview is also a two-year project that features additional and refurbished science classrooms, new classroom space for the band, choir, and orchestra programs, expansion of the NV Little Theater, bathroom renovations, and other classroom upgrades. The renovation of the Little Theater will be completed by January 2011. New student hallway lockers will be installed in the summer of 2011 along with improvements to the gymnasium locker rooms.
McCord Junior High – Improvements consist of a new HVAC system, refurbished fine arts classroom spaces, renovated office area and front entranceway.
Facility improvements for Arbor Hills Junior High and Timberstone Junior High were completed last summer.
The new schools and renovated academic spaces will benefit students, families and residents for generations. Thank you to the Sylvania community for enhancing the student experience.
