From the Superintendent...

A Memorable School Year

 

At two separate graduation ceremonies on June 10th, the accomplishments of 640 talented Sylvania Northview and Southview seniors were celebrated.  Graduation is the capstone event that punctuates years of academic preparation and powerful learning experiences.  It is a proud moment for graduates, family members, friends, and educators.       

 

Some of the noteworthy student and staff achievements of the 2006-07 school year were:

  • Two National Merit Scholar Finalists; Seven National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists; and
    Six National Merit Commended Scholars
  • Southview High School ranked in fourth in the state in the State Science
    Day Competition
  • Fifteen students placed in the UT Foreign Language Day
  • At both high schools, the choirs, bands, and orchestras earned state distinctions.
  • Southview and Northview Speech and Debate students competed in state
    and national competitions.
  • Forty-five student artists had work displayed at regional and state art exhibitions.
  • Career tech students placed in the Business Professionals of America
    national competition
  • Athletic teams won league titles and competed at the district, regional,
    and state levels.
  • Sylvan Elementary received the “Spirit of Inclusion” Award by the
    Arc of Lucas Count.
  • All three junior high schools placed at the Power of the Pen district competition; The Timberstone team was the state champion
  • All three junior high schools placed in the regional Math Counts competition
  • McCord seventh grader Eric Cheng competed in the National Spelling Bee competition
    in Washington D.C.
  • Central Elementary Junior Quiz Bowl Team came in first out of 75 Lucas County schools
  • McCord principal Jeff Robbins and Central principal Toni Gerber named
    Ohio Art Education Association Administrators of the Year
  • Finalist in the Ohio Technology Teacher of the Year - Whiteford teacher Chris Elsie
  • Reading intervention teacher Kelly Duwve - one of 22 educators across
    Ohio to attain a Literacy Specialist Endorsement
  • Timberstone guidance counselor Eddie Boggs – Jefferson Award finalist
  • Bill Geha – Ray of Hope honoree
  • For the eighth year in a row, the district earned a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence
    in Financial Reporting.

 

As always, the support of the Sylvania community is what enables the Sylvania School District to provide students with a quality educational experience.
