Guide for Writing IPDP Learning Goals

1. Learning Goals

  • Learning goals describe desired knowledge to be gained
  • Learning goals also reflect district, building, personal and student needs and strategies
  • Learning goals ARE NOT THE SAME as goals for improving
    PRACTICE or PERFORMANCE

2. A learning goal should contain a verb that relates to learning:

  • I will explore…
  • I will research…
  • I will investigate...
  • I will study…
  • I will become familiar with…

3. Learning goals should cite an area of knowledge

  • I will explore alternative assessment
  • I will investigate the use of service learning in science
  • I will study problem-based learning
  • I will become familiar with the internet as a research based tool

4. Learning goals should cite a rationale

  • I will explore alternative assessment to help improve math achievement
  • I will investigate the use of service learning in science to share knowledge with my colleagues
  • I will study problem-based learning to deepen understanding in science
  • I will become familiar with the internet as a research based tool to help improve language arts instruction
