Dear Sylvania Learning Community,

Chilly weather descended upon our Sylvania Schools again this month, but hopefully, temperatures will steadily warm in the coming weeks. Please know that I, along with district administrators, carefully and extensively monitor windchill temperatures, weather forecasts, and road conditions when making determinations to close school. We will always prioritize the safety and well-being of our staff and students when making decisions. Thank you for your patience as we steadily march toward springtime and for your continued support.

I want to thank our learning community for the positive response to the January Digital Digest. Culture, Climate, and Communications is a strategic priority for Sylvania Schools. This newsletter allows us to communicate directly with a broader audience beyond our parents and staff. We are thrilled to have community members signing up for the Digital Digest to stay informed about important school topics.

This February edition of the Digital Digest contains valuable information. Please read below to learn more!

Thank You, Master Facilities Plan Committee Members! Plan Shared at Board of Education Meeting.

An important presentation was made at Monday's Board of Education meeting pertaining to the Master Facilities Plan (MFP). The MFP presentation marked the culmination of a community-based, comprehensive initiative that began in November 2023. The MFP Committee was comprised of business leaders, community members, parents, teachers, support staff, administrators and students, who met regularly to assess current facility usage and future needs associated with creating 21st-century learning environments. Key focus areas for this committee included understanding enrollment and residential trends, reviewing maintenance costs associated with aging buildings throughout the district, exploring potential grade level re-configurations in the future and exploring redistricting to optimize facility use and the need for specialized spaces for diverse learning needs.

The Board of Education is now taking time to digest the information from the presentation. They have not discussed or determined a timeline for addressing any of the concerns brought forth by the committee. The presentation offered a number of possible alternatives for addressing future growth in enrollment, space needs for preschool and special education, infrastructure, and learning environments. The options varied in the impact, funds required, and time to accomplish; the Board will take these into serious consideration as they begin to dive into the data and alternatives presented. The community is likely eager to hear a general timeline for any decisions, which is difficult to answer at this time because the information was just presented this week. We can, however, note that at this time, there have been no discussions or plans for a levy to be put on the ballot this November.

We encourage the community to view the MFP webpage, where committee meeting summaries and presentations are posted. Monday’s presentation slides and link to view the Board meeting are posted here as well. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED!

Sylvania Cares Event Benefits Important Cause

On behalf of the Sylvania Schools leadership team, I would like to highly commend the students of Northview’s student council and Southview’s senate for planning and conducting the annual Sylvania Cares initiative. Each year, our two high schools select an important cause to benefit through awareness and philanthropy, and this year, the Down Syndrome Society of Greater Toledo was the recipient. Both schools sold Sylvania Cares t-shirts leading up to the Northview v. Southview Boys Basketball game and had a “Blue Out” in both student sections in honor of the Down Syndrome Association. What a wonderful sight to see our student bodies come together! Sylvania Project Unify, comprised of players with and without disabilities, played between the JV and Varsity basketball games. Congratulations to everyone involved in making this event a model example of student-led community awareness and philanthropic campaign and, more importantly, for showing that Sylvania truly cares!

Finally, please be encouraged that the 4th Quarter is fast approaching, beginning on March 14th, and we are all entering a season of finality and student highlights and accomplishments. Let’s head into this home stretch on a positive note, similar to the efforts put forth up to this point in the school year.

Thank you for reading our monthly Digital Digest!
Stay warm and safe!
