This past year, Sylvania Schools has offered the Sylvania Alternative Learning Academy (SALA) to support about 10% of our student population that elected not to attend in-person school during the pandemic. We recognize the vaccine will increase the safety of our schools tremendously; however, we also understand some of our families still may have a desire for our SALA program when the next school year begins. Because of this, we will offer SALA for one more year to provide a safe environment for students and families that continue to be at risk due to the pandemic.

The program will continue by building on the strengths it has demonstrated and addressing some needs for revision. It will continue to be open to students in grades K-12. Students will continue to be engaged with Sylvania teachers, intervention specialists, and other district support personnel. At the 6-12 level, this will mean students will still have access to a range of digital classes to continue their learning and graduation progress. Sylvania teachers will still monitor that progress, engage with students individually, and provide support with content challenges. Improvements at the 6-12 level will include an expanded range of AP and honors course options as well as a requirement for students to attend live bi-weekly meetings with their teacher to increase individual support and engagement.

It has been a privilege to support SALA students, families, and teachers this year. As we move into next year, we are sure the dedication to learning in a challenging time will continue.
